The Remaking of Public Relations (and Other PR Blog Jots)

Kami Watson Huyse writes today's PR Jots. She is the author of Communication Overtones and is a contributor to the PRSA Byline Blog, Now is Gone and MARCOM blogs.  She will also spearhead a team that will write for the PRSA International Blog starting next week, PR Evolution.

Traditional PR is Running on Thin Air
Silicon Valley Watcher

Journalist Tom Formeski says that traditional PR is running on thin air.  "PR today reminds me of the Roadrunner cartoons. The times when Wily E. Coyote is chasing the Road Runner and notices he is running on thin air, at which point he plummets thousands of feet to a distant canyon floor. That's how I envisage the PR industry today--about to plummet from a great height," writes Formeski.  Engage in PR Blogger Kyle Flaherty says "not so," he instead says PR is adapting.  What do you say?

Ideas for Global PR Blog Week 3.0
PR meets the WWW

Constantin Basturea announces a free virtual event that will take place in February to bring the public relations blogging and social media community together.  He asks the following questions:

  • How do you see this event?
  • What do you expect from it?
  • What would you like to read/ see/ listen to?
  • What it will make it most valuable for you, and for the industry?

Not everyone can get out to an on-site conference, so maybe PR Blog Week 3.0 should be all about networking to allow for maximum interaction.  What do the Jot readers think?

Astroturfing: "Have You Taken a Look at the Grassroots?"
Diva Marketing Blog

Shel Israel, Geoff Livingston and Toby Bloomberg discuss astroturfing on her BlogTalkRadio show, Diva Marketing Talks.  You learn where the term "astroturfing" came from and why it is behavior that is absolutely off-limits for social media campaigns.  Says Livingston, "Social media adheres to community principles, as a result of that it is particularly vulnerable to organizations acting inappropriately and representing themselves differently than what they may actually be." As a result many of the transgressors pay a heavy price, think WalMart's flog. Proceed at your own risk.
